Understanding Ofsted’s Guidance of AI During Inspections

Does Ofsted support the use of AI?

Ofsted supports the use of AI where it enhances education and care but does not treat AI as a separate area of inspection. Inspectors do not directly evaluate AI tools or their technical design. Instead, they consider the impact AI use may have on the experiences and outcomes of children and learners, whether used by providers, staff, or families.

Do Inspectors look closely at the use of AI?

Inspectors are not required to seek out AI use, and reports will only mention it if it significantly influences inspection outcomes. Any reference to AI will be treated as part of the broader evaluation process, just like other technologies or tools used by a provider. Ofsted’s focus remains on how AI use supports or hinders the best interests of children.

Are there expectations to use AI?

There are no expectations for providers to use AI or to use it in a specific way. However, since AI is already being used by some children, learners, or staff, inspectors may ask how its use is managed. For example, they might explore how AI is used in tracking attendance, supporting staff, or generating reports, and whether its use is accurate and appropriate.

Do Ofsted look at the use of AI?

While Ofsted does not separately assess AI-related risks, inspectors will consider issues such as data protection, safeguarding, and bias if these arise in the context of AI use. The focus is on the provider’s decision-making and risk management, not the technical function of AI tools themselves. Inspectors will only consider AI if it is relevant to their overall evaluation.
